Does Winter Have You in Hibernation Mode?

The new year brings new possibilities and the sense that we should start the year strong. But I'll be honest—I've been struggling to kick off this month the way I had hoped (getting sick twice in four weeks certainly didn't help). It's easy to feel guilty about not accomplishing as I much as I would like, but if Mother Nature takes time to hibernate then why shouldn't we? And the reality is, our productivity and creativity can benefit from a pause.

I often find my best ideas come to me when I'm not actively thinking about a project, especially when I have idle time. Ideas spark and grow when imagination can to take the lead rather than the pressure to produce.

I still remember the excitement I felt when the perfect concept popped into my head for this logo design while driving home one day. The project was not actively on my mind, but something was certainly brewing in the background that day. This particular moment has stuck with me, but I know there have been countless others.

The logo design for Tara Lemerise Yoga plays off restorative yoga positions and her initials, T and L.

Life rarely allows for full hibernation mode, but it's worth trying to embrace the little moments of pause throughout the day. Stare out the window for a few minutes. Bundle up for a walk when the sun is shining and observe the beauty of the resting world. Swap out the news / podcast for music or even silence. Peruse a bookstore or art gallery simply to be surrounded by the creativity of others.

See where your mind goes—the journey may surprise you. Besides, the renewal of spring is just around the corner!

Planning ahead means more time for pause.

I love to plan ahead because it allows more time for idle moments and creative ideas to flow. So remember—it's never too early to discuss a project or reach out to collaborators!

Have an upcoming project? I'd love to hear about. Email me to schedule a time to chat.

I regularly post tips, past projects, and other small doses of content about graphic design for events and marketing on LinkedIn. And I love to see what others are up to— so let's connect.

This time of year is perfect for two things—escaping the cold and going to see excellent movies! I watched Ana Duvernay's newest movie, Origin, last night and can not recommend it enough. What movies have you been enjoying this season?
